Pier 70 in San Francisco, California, is a historic pier in San Francisco's Potrero Point neighborhood, home to the Union Iron Works and later to Bethlehem Shipbuilding. It was one of the largest industrial sites in San Francisco during the two World Wars. Today, it is regarded as the best-preserved 19th century industrial complex west of the Mississippi. Kneass Boat Works
Kneass Boat Works was a shipbuilding company in San Francisco, California. To support the World War 2 demand for ships, Kneass Boat Works built: US Navy Sub chasers, US Army barges and tugboats. Kneass Boat Works was started by California native George Washington Kneass (1859–1923) in 1868, at 22 Mission Street, San Francisco. George Kneass started as an apprentice to boat builder Martin Vice. The two became partners operating a shipyard at Pier 70 at 671 Illinois Street, San Francisco. Business was good and in 1898 Kneass opened a second shipyard at 718 3rd Street, San Francisco. At its peak, Kneass employed 50 workers. USS Steadfast
USS ''Steadfast'' (AFDM-14) (former ''YFD-71'') is a ''AFDM-14''-class floating dry dock built in 1945 and operated by the United States Navy. Construction and career ''YFD-71'' was built by the Pollock Shipbuilding Co., in Stockton, California in 1945. She would be commissioned later in 1945 after her delivery to the Navy on 1 July. In 1981, the dry dock was re-designated as AFDM-14. She would be given the name Steadfast later in 1984. On 1 April 1986, USS Tuscaloosa (LST-1187) was seen dry docked inside ''Steadfast'' at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. In February 1987, USS Bagley (FF-1069) traveled to Concord Naval Weapons Station where she unloaded ammunition before beginning a restricted availability at San Diego on the 16th. Building 101 is a neoclassical building located in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood, designed by Frederick H. Meyer. The building was built in 1917 for Bethlehem Steel, which used it as an administrative building while it owned the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Bethlehem Steel Corporation Shipbuilding Division was created in 1905 when the Bethlehem Steel Corporation of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, acquired the San Francisco shipyard Union Iron Works. Bethlehem Steel Corporation Shipbuilding Division was created in 1905 when the Bethlehem Steel Corporation of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, acquired the San Francisco shipyard Union Iron Works. In 1917 it was incorporated as Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, Limited. The division's headquarters were moved to Quincy, Massachusetts, after acquiring the Fore River Shipyard in 1913. In 1940, Bethlehem Shipbuilding was the largest of the "Big Three" U.S. shipbuilders that could build any ship, followed by Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock and New York Shipbuilding Corporation (New York Ship). The Pacific Rolling Mill Company was the West’s first iron and steel producing foundry, founded in 1866, in San Francisco, California. (The company was also known as Pacific Rolling Mills and the two names were used interchangeably throughout its history.) The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) was a gold rush that began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
